During the summer of 2018, I took part in the Hello Wood summer camp, a design-build program for architecture students from across Hungary. Each team was assigned to a different village near the camp and was tasked with creating something for the local community. Our group worked in Olaszliszka, where we quickly noticed that the existing playgrounds were in such poor condition that children could barely use them.

We decided to build a new playground, but it felt important not to just show up, construct something, and leave. We wanted to involve the children in the process so they could feel connected to the space, not just as something given to them but as something they helped create. Of course, they couldn’t take part in the actual construction for safety reasons, but we found ways to work together—painting the inside of the structure alongside them. This way, the playground became more than just a new object in their village; it became a place they had a hand in making, something that truly belonged to them.
